Negative Effects of Not Brushing Your Teeth

It is estimated that roughly half of all Americans don’t floss daily and about one in five, don’t brush twice a day. So, if you’re one of these people, luckily, you’re not alone.

However, you still might want to consider making some changes to your oral health routine.
The ADA warns that “Taking care of your teeth and gums isn't just about preventing cavities or bad breath, the mouth is a gateway to your body's overall health." They always recommend at least one visit to the dentist per year and as always recommends brushing twice and flossing once every day.
Here, we will go over some of the complications that can arise when you don’t take proper care of your oral health.

1.    Tooth Loss
For those who’ve never worried about their teeth falling out, it’s never too late to start thinking about it. Studies have shown that most adults between the ages of 20 and 64 have lost on average 7 of their permanent teeth. Also, about 10% of American between the ages of 50 and 64 have none of their original teeth left. Both tooth decay and gum disease can, if untreated, lead to tooth loss.

2.    Gum Disease
Many people don’t even realize that their gums are not supposed to bleed when you brush or floss. And, for those who do notice this, it likely means that you have some form of gum disease, at least in a mild form.

Gingivitis is the most common culprit and will cause your gums to turn red, swell and makes them bleed easily which is part of the response from the gingivitis bacteria in the plaque built up in between your gums. It is estimated that more than half of all American have mild gingivitis.

3.    Halitosis or Bad Breath
Commonly called bad breath, it is formally known as halitosis. This condition affects as much as 65% of the population and while there are several conditions that can cause it, poor oral hygiene is the number one culprit. Some food particles can linger in your mouth for hours after a meal and as your oral bacteria starts to break them down, they produce odor-causing bacteria that can contribute to the smell of your breath. While brushing, it is important to give your tongue a scrub to help remove some of the odor-causing bacteria.
