Marysville CA Dentist Discusses Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt in both upper and lower jaws. When wisdom teeth erupt, it can be quite painful and sometimes, you may need surgery because it did not erupt the correct way, and it has to be removed.  It is common that wisdom teeth need to be taken out if a dentist recommends it.

Here are some expectations and what you need to know about wisdom teeth surgery:

•    Bring someone who can be with you after the procedure. This is because drugs used in wisdom teeth surgeries usually take a few minutes or hours to get out of the system, leaving you feeling vulnerable after the procedure. This is also for moral support to somehow lessen the anxiety or fear or the surgery.

•    Your dentist’s first move is to give you anesthesia. You and your dentist will discuss on what kind of anesthesia is suitable for you. Sometimes, before your procedure begins your dentist may require the approval of your physician to see if you are fit enough to take the anesthesia that is discussed.

•    To expose the tooth, your dentist will make a cut through your gum tissue.

•    If the tooth will be too big for the incision, your dentist will divide the tooth into several pieces to take them out.

•    After the removal of the tooth, your dentist will clean the area to be free from any remain of the bone or tooth

•    Some dentist stitches your incision for faster healing process, but some dentist don’t.

•    After the stitching of your incision, you need to put on a gauze to control the bleeding and to prevent blood clot.

•    After the surgery, your incision will bleed a lot. You may need to have to put a new gauze from time to time to control blood flow. Your dentist will also prescribe drugs to help control the bleeding.

•    If your cheeks swell, it is because of the surgery. You may need to put some ice pack to the cheek that is swelling and this may swell from 2 to 3 days. Avoid lifting heavy objects during these days as it can seriously affect the healing of the incision. Lifting heavy objects can cause the blood to overflow from the only half-healed incision.

•    Eat only soft foods to prevent the incision to open. Keep yourself hydrated after the procedure. Do not drink or eat hot foods for the first day, and do not drink with a straw because it may lead to blood clotting.

There you have it! If you ever plan to get your wisdom teeth removed, at least you now know how it is done and what you need and need not to do to heal fast.
